That is why they readily visit puddles, ponds, garden pools, or even animal watering troughs. However, in these situations, their behavior remains calm and controlled because bees are poor swimmers. They will always prefer water-soaked sphagnum moss on the bank to a drifting boat.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
A few dozen bees may be present at the same time, even during a heat wave.
They survey their surroundings, circle around, make sure they\u2019re approaching safely, and come to drink for a few seconds. Then they fly off again. You don\u2019t usually see the frantic movements shown in some videos that have gone viral. Personally, I\u2019ve never seen any.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bees communicate the discovery of a food source extremely effectively through their recruitment behaviors within the colony. A sugar-rich resource can thus very quickly attract and excite hundreds of bees from several hives. In contrast, plain water\u2014even if rich in minerals\u2014does not cause such a frenzy.
It is worth noting that the feeding syrup given to bees under specific circumstances must meet very precise preparation requirements. A poorly prepared syrup causes diarrhea in bees\u2014a condition they could certainly do without, given their already short lifespan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nWhy are these videos so popular?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Two factors may explain their increase. <\/strong>
The first is social media itself. A watering trough\u2014a honeycomb-like floating island entirely covered with hundreds of bees\u2014is a spectacular image that naturally generates clicks, comments, and shares. Algorithms favor this type of highly visual content. In contrast, people are just as enthralled by a plethora of fantastic photos touting the features and design of 3D watering troughs\u2014all neon yellow, all curiously identical\u2014but\u2026 which don\u2019t interest a single bee.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe second issue sometimes stems from a lack of understanding of bee biology. Many people sincerely want to help the bees and believe that by offering them sugar during the summer, they are doing them a favor. However, in most cases, a healthy colony is perfectly capable of finding its own food sources. Feeding at the wrong time or in an inappropriate manner can, on the contrary, create more problems than it solves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\nFeeding in the open air: a devastating practice that is strongly discouraged<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
In beekeeping, feeding syrup or honey outdoors is generally discouraged, or even prohibited depending on health conditions. There are two main reasons for this recommendation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An easily accessible source of sugar strongly stimulates the colonies. When this resource disappears, the foragers continue their search. They then explore the entire surrounding area. Pillage can quickly escalate into violent fights among bees and lead to the partial or total loss of a colony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wasps, flies, hornets, and bees from several different apiaries may all be present at the same time.
